senior product design engineer
The Senior Product Design (PD) Engineer is responsible for mechanical design and mass production of OQO products, and works closely with the product design group and other engineering teams to design OQO’s next generation of products. The PD engineer reports to the Director of Product Design.
responsibilities
- Define, design, and implement OQO’s product designs
- Contribute creative mechanical solutions to hard problems, drawing on experience, research, and genuine love of design craft
- Research and select new technologies, materials, and components to be integrated into future OQO products, managing custom component projects when necessary
- Prove and refine designs through successive rounds of modeling, prototyping, debugging, and through formal engineering builds
- Provide extensive and ongoing support to contract manufacturing partner and custom component supply base, overseas and domestically
- Provide support to manufacturing test development and manufacturing engineering
- Create and maintain formal production documentation of mechanical parts, including all necessary morphological, cosmetic, and functional specifications
- Shepherd design from concept to stable high yield manufacturing, meeting stringent acceptance criteria
requirements
- 6 years product design experience
- Familiarity with a range of materials and processes, including standard design rules for plastic injection molding, sheet metal forming, stamping, casting, machining, and various finishing techniques
- Versed in PD development cycles
- Experience using Solid Modeling CAD software (Unigraphics, SolidWorks, or ProE). Experience with Unigraphics a plus
- Experience with formal revision control and release software (Agile, Arena, CVS, Subversion, etc.)
- Experience supporting at least 2 shipping products from early engineering builds through high volume mass production
- Proven technical expertise in mechanical engineering and design
- Experience supervising overseas suppliers, including tier 1 contract manufacturers
- Committed to integrating DFM and DFT into all stages of PD design
- Facility with both NPI and ongoing product upgrades.
- Experience owning and leading a product through design phases, either independently, or as the project leader for a small team
- Direct experience or knowledge in laptops, PDAs, digital cameras, media players, or smartphones strongly preferred.
