OQO Selects Silicon Motion's SM722 Low-Power Mobile Display Controller For Its ultra personal computer

LAS VEGAS, NV - CES - January 08, 2004 -- Silicon Motion Inc., a leading supplier of multimedia storage and acceleration solutions for mobile devices, today announced that OQO, Inc. has chosen its SM722 mobile display controller as a key component in its ultra personal computer (uPC) that offers the power of a Windows XP PC in a PDA form factor.

Silicon Motion was selected by OQO as they are the only supplier of cost-effective, low-power demand custom solutions for high-performance, accelerated 3D graphics. Power consumption is even more critical for these types of uPC devices - using the SM722 translated in a dramatic reduction in average operating power consumption in the OQO computer with Silicon Motion's ReduceOnT technology. ReduceOnT is an intelligent power management software that algorithmically varies the clock and power depending on the system demands.

OQO's computer offers a long battery life, small form factor and supports dual display. It is a highly versatile handheld wireless computer that easily becomes a notebook or desktop PC. The OQO computer can replace a mobile PC plus PDA combination and at twelve ounces can easily fit in your pocket. The OQO computer can dock into a desktop stand, giving the device full desktop functionality.

"OQO's ultra personal computer is aligned with Silicon Motion's mission to bring rich multimedia to mobile devices," said Kevin Kitagawa, Senior Director of Marketing at Silicon Motion. "Together, we can provide solutions that enable smaller, faster, more flexible devices, and with an extended battery life we provide consumers with the best multimedia experience."

"OQO selected the SMI SM722 because it was the only display controller that would meet our criteria for both high performance and low power consumption," said Jory Bell, CEO of OQO. "Building a full-power, full-featured pocketable computer required utilizing the best available components in every area, and SMI was the clear choice for display controller."

The SM722 Mobile Display Controller features a 128-bit 2D/3D mobile graphics engine and 8MBytes of internal memory. The SM722 offers enhanced dual display and hardware accelerated MPEG2/DVD playback all in a single footprint, Multi-Chip BGA (MCBT) product, and allows design flexibility across different application platforms.

The SM722 is part of Silicon Motion's Lynx SM7XX family of products that provide the key features needed to design the next generation of ultra portable computers, mobile multimedia devices, automotive telematics, and embedded applications.
